PAKTIA PROVINCE, Afghanistan - Two local nationals and one Afghan National Police officer were injured when an insurgent mortar round aimed at the Chamkani bazaar struck a parked vehicle Sept. 18 in Paktia province.

The wounded were transported to a forward operating base aid station in the area, where one villager and the police officer were treated and released. The second civilian sustained more serious wounds and was transferred to Chamkani hospital for further treatment.

“Most of the attacks are an attempt to intimidate the local populace from participating in the parliamentary elections,” said a Special Forces officer on the ground.

Reports from the area state voter turnout was good despite insurgent disruption and that ballot boxes at some polling stations had an abundant amount of submitted ballots due to avid voter participation.
