Command of the Utah Army National Guard's 300th Military Intelligence Brigade (Linguist) was transferred from Col. Scott Chalmers to Lt. Col. John Isom during a change of command ceremony June 6, 2026 at Camp W.G. Williams, Utah.
This ceremony also marked the retirement of Chalmers and celebrated his career and the many improvements he made to the 300th MI during his time in command.
Chalmers was commended by his colleagues for the improvements that came to the brigade through his accomplishments.
“His leadership has been not only inspirational, but it has been strategic as well,” said Col. Andrew Owens, who presided over this change of command in his first act as the assistant adjutant general of the Utah National Guard.
Owens listed numerous organizations which have strong relationships with the 300th MI, including INSCOM (Intelligence and Security Command), the NSA, and the DEA. “That is a direct reflection of the work and effort that Col. Chalmers has brought to the table day in and day out,” he said.
Chalmers' successor also had high praise. “You've guided the 300th through countless challenges, through amazing wins and in support of demanding missions around the globe,” said Isom. “That's a legacy that will last far beyond today and will sustain our partners and our fight for many, many years to come.”
Chalmers was emotional and expressed gratitude as he bid farewell to those in his former command. “Serving in this uniform has been the greatest honor in my life. Commanding his brigade has been the greatest privilege in my career,” he said. “Thank you for allowing me to be a part of something bigger than myself.
Owens spoke with confidence about Isom’s capabilities as the new brigade commander.
“One thing that I always promise Soldiers is that we're going to give them the best leaders we can find,” he said. “Mike Isom, over the 20 years that I've known him, he has displayed nothing but raw talent and effort and humility in getting the job done.”
Isom reflected about his time in the Utah National Guard. He enlisted with 141st Military Intelligence Battalion in 1997 and gave thanks to his mentors. Isom then spoke about the future, and emphasized his desire as a leader to help those in his command be as effective as possible.
“Part of my promise and that of our team to do for you, is to make sure you have the tools, the resources and everything that you need to to be effective in your efforts,” he said. “We can't do this alone. We must do this together.”
