Army Reserve unit hosts presentation at Indiana high school
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Soldiers from the 310th Expeditionary Sustainment Command gave an Army equipment and vehicle presentation to Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets at North Central High School on April 17, 2026.
The presentation, which familiarized cadets with the functions of the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, Light Medium Tactical Vehicle, and the M50 Joint Service General Purpose (Protective) Mask, also highlighted the military as a potential career option after graduation.
“I enjoyed being out in the community and talking to the students, our future generation, about possibly joining not necessarily the Army, but other military branches,” said Staff Sgt. Japheth Hougesen, Motor Transport Operator, 310th Expeditionary Sustainment Command. “I also liked educating them on the things we do in the military, and I was impressed by their eagerness to learn about the equipment,” said Hougesen.
Hougesen explained why he continued to participate in Army community relations events. “I do this to educate the younger generation on what they can do in the military, to share my personal experiences, and to show them that the military can give them a good career,” he said.
Spc. Trey Tolliver, Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic, 310th ESC, was impressed by some of the students’ knowledge of both the military and military vehicles. “Some of them already knew what an LMTV was, why pro masks were needed, and how four-wheel drive, which makes the HMMWV very mobile, operates,” Tolliver said.
Tolliver, a first-time participant in the event, shared his reason for volunteering. “I thought it would be the right thing to do to go out and properly explain why this equipment is used,” he said.
The presentation prompted many questions from students, such as the purpose of a sling. “I was able to pull apart the bars on the LMTV and show them how we have hooks on our equipment so that if a vehicle has to be airdropped to an area, this is how we’ll get it done by hooking and attaching it to this part of the vehicle,” Tolliver said.
The team fielded more questions from a cadet who was interested in joining the Army. “We had one student who asked a lot of questions like, ‘What do I need to do to join the military?’ ‘Who do I speak with?’ ‘When can I join?’” said Tolliver. “Spc. (Armando) Cruz and Sgt. (Anthony) Randall gave him some information on the proper steps he needed to take to join the military,” Tolliver added.
Finally, two cadets shared their appreciation for the presentation and for the military as a prospective career choice. “I liked seeing and learning about the different types of vehicles,” said Cadet 1st Lt. Dennis Pullen, North Central junior. “I think it’s really nice to do things like this because it gives us an interest and helps us with our future.”
“Overall, I liked seeing the vehicles, the information I gained from the presentation, and the interaction,” Cadet Capt. Jahniyah McIntosh, North Central senior, added. “I’m already interested in joining the military, but the presentation made me more interested.
