A crucial node of patient care for Spartan Soldiers is once again open for business at Marne Medic Troop Medical Clinic on Fort Stewart.
Leaders and Soldiers from 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team and Winn Army Community Hospital gathered April 2 to cut the ribbon at the clinic’s pharmacy. It is the first time in three years the pharmacy has been in operation.
Maj. Jason Cha, Winn’s outgoing officer in charge of pharmacy, spearheaded the effort to bring the pharmacy back online. His work has created a twofold benefit for the medical operation.
“The Soldiers here, over here at Second Brigade, really need that access to care to make sure they’re medically ready and ready medical as well,” Cha said.
Medically ready means combat Soldiers are healthy and fit for operations, while ready medical means medical Soldiers are prepared to provide care when deployed.
Cha’s success extends beyond local access; he has driven the usage rates for Q-Anywhere and the ScriptCenter to record highs, competing with the largest military treatment facilities for the top spot.
“He leads the number one pharmacy in the region and … probably the number one pharmacy in the DHA,” said Col. Margaret Berryman, Winn director and commander. Berryman emphasized that the clinic serves as a vital training ground for the 68-series military occupational specialty. Reopening the pharmacy allows technicians to hone their skills under pressure, preparing them for the battlefield where they often operate without constant supervision.
“Do you always have that pharmacist oversight looking over your shoulder when you’re dispensing pharmaceuticals?” she asked. “No, you don’t.
“When you deploy, what are they doing? They’re the doc. They’re the ones treating those injuries wherever they may be deployed.”
Spartan Brigade commander Col. Alexis Perez-Cruz underscored that this medical access is a cornerstone of his brigade’s lethality. Without the support of the medical Soldiers and staff of Marne Medic TMC, the brigade would not be as ready as it is, he said.
“As the armor (immediate response force) for the entire nation, if the President or the Secretary (of War) calls, we’ll say ‘Send Me,’” Perez-Cruz said. “That’s important to know, for us, when we say ‘Send Me,’ that also means that doctors, medics, all of the providers, all of the things you do every single day, it’s for something.”
Cha is now transitioning to a new role as the branch chief for auxiliary services medical officers at U.S. Army Human Resources Command at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
