FORT LEE, Va. — The Fort Lee Family and Morale Welfare and Recreation’s Child and Youth Services hosted a Month of the Military Child proclamation signing event attended by Command Sgt. Maj. Nickea Harris, the U.S. Army Garrison Fort Lee Command Sergeant Major, other Fort Lee leaders, parents and military kids March 31 here at the CYS School Age Center.

“At Fort Lee, we want to continue to remind our kids that they are part of that larger Army family,” said Tamara Johnson, Fort Lee CYS coordinator. “Throughout the month of April, our Child and Youth Services team has a bunch of fun events planned to create great memories in celebration of our military children.”

Month of the Military Child is observed each April to honor military children and youth for their service, commitment and sacrifice in support of the Army's mission. The observance reiterates the Army’s commitment to provide quality care and positive youth development for a bright future.

“Military children get to do amazing things like meet new people, travel over the world, experience different cultures and much more,” Johnson said. “As incredible as that may be, the change experienced in military life can also be very rigorous and very difficult. On average, military children move from place to place 10 times.”

To formally recognize and celebrate the resilience of military youth, Fort Lee will have a few fun events throughout the month.

Kids registered in CYS programs are invited to the Pep Rally April 3, 2:30 - 4:30 p.m., to participate in a field day of music and fun at the CYS Campus Sports Field.

The entire community is invited to get "color dusted" at the Color Run April 25 with check-in starting at 10:00 a.m. and the first wave of runners starting at 11:30 a.m. Participants are splashed with color as they run the designated route on the CYS campus. The Color Run is open to the community. No walk-ups; registration required.

Bring your kids to Jump Jam April 30, 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. at the CYS Campus Sports Field. There will be games, bounce houses and lots of fun. This event is FREE and open to the community.

The April 2026 Month of the Military Child theme is “Military Children and Youth: Strength in Every Story,” shines a light on the everyday courage of military children. Their stories, filled with resilience, adaptability, and quiet strength. demonstrate the powerful character they build while growing up in a world defined by service and sacrifice.
