SUFFOLK, Va. – The Naval Information Warfare (IW) community has concluded its second "Big Ideas Challenge," a competition that brings ideas from the deckplates directly to leadership. The challenge harnesses the ingenuity of its personnel to solve pressing issues and enhance the Navy’s warfighting capabilities. This year's event drew over 80 proposals from information warfare and joint commands across the globe, showcasing the innovative spirit of military and civilian professionals throughout the IW enterprise.

The challenge focused on three core categories: IW Readiness, Advancing Warfighting Capabilities, and IW Alignment and Integration. A panel of subject matter experts, senior civilian leaders, and senior enlisted leaders rigorously evaluated each proposal. Vice Adm. Mike Vernazza, commander of Naval Information Forces and IBoss, made the final selections, including a fourth “Wild Card” winner chosen from the core categories.

The four winners of the second annual Big Ideas Challenge are:

    • IW Readiness: LT Conor Cashin, IT1 Brennan McCool, IT1 Cameron Hood, and IT2 Daniel Mercado for "CANES LITE."
    • IW Alignment & Integration: CTIC Erik Oehrtman for the "Command Management System."
    • Advancing IW Warfighting Capabilities: Mr. Chris Suda, Mr. Chris Dobry, and Mr. Nicholas Wagner for the "CHIMERA Software Management Tool."
    • Wild Card: CTRC William Noble and CTR2 John Higgins for "The Fusion of Artificial Intelligence and Signals Analysis."

While the judges selected four winners, the initiative provided all participants with valuable feedback and connected them with experts to help turn great ideas into actionable solutions.

"The Naval IW community is full of innovative warfighters who are achieving outcomes we have never had because they are doing things we have never done to increase warfighting readiness," said Vice Adm. Vernazza. "Our Sailors confront gaps and issues daily, and the Big Ideas Challenge now allows the IW enterprise and the entire Navy to leverage their inventive solutions. This highlights IW's vital warfighting function as it delivers assured command and control, integrated fires, and mission assurance from seabed to space.”

The challenge underscores the Navy's commitment to fostering a culture of innovation and empowering its members to directly shape the future of naval warfare.

NAVIFOR’s mission is to generate agile and technically superior combat-ready IW forces to ensure our Navy will decisively DETER, COMPETE, and WIN.
