U.S. Air Force Col. Christopher T. “CJ” Johnson, commander of the 195th Wing, California Air National Guard, U.S. Space Force Brig. Gen. Jeremiah S. Tucker, deputy director of Joint Forces Development and Training, Headquarters U.S. Space Command, and Rear Admiral Jim Rodman, U.S. Navy (Ret.), former chief engineer of Navy Information Warfare Systems Command engaged in a panel discussing “Future Wars: Technology, Power and the Pursuit of Peace” at San Diego State University, California on March 26, 2026.
“I expect to see AI used to our own devices in the future.” says General Tucker “To present the deterrent and denial to any adversary that no matter what they try to do, we have already used machine learning, used AI to help elevate and expedite our thinking matrix so that we are in their movement at any given time and force our adversary to react to us twice.”
On the implementation of AI and generating new ideas to support the defense of the country, the panelists noted that the government is exploring all partnership possibilities in commercial, academia and between its allies to confidently leverage emerging technology.
“We have to figure out how to squash down the innovation curve so that nobody is afraid to bring an idea forward,.” says Rear Admiral Rodman.
The panel engaged with students and members of the public to foster better understanding of the complexities of war in the modern age and military technology’s implications for the future.
“It is my vision for preparing future war fighters on how to leverage AI in various ways.” says Col. Johnson. “For the future, I’m interested in those adaptive technologies that notice signals changing and identify devices for reprogramming. That speed is going to keep the edge for our service members.”
The panel was hosted by San Diego State University’s College of Arts and Letters Center for War and Society.
