Armament shop provides quality weapons support

CONTINGENCY OPERATING BASE ADDER, Iraq- As soldiers continue to perform convoy missions and logistics operations around Iraq, it is easy to overlook a very important maintenance operation that enables service members to protect themselves.

Soldiers with the 632nd Heavy Maintenance Company, 110th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 224th Sustainment Brigade, 103rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), provide daily weapons maintenance and support their armament shop at Contingency Operating Base Adder, Iraq.

Soldiers take their jobs seriously when providing weapons maintenance and repair to a wide array of units in United States Division- - South. They also make sure that unit armorers are knowledgeable in barrel head space and timing, and that their weapon systems are functioning properly.

Proper upkeep is very important when it comes to weapon systems,” said Spc. Salvatore Inga, a small arms repairer with the 632nd Maint. Co., and a Brooklyn, N.Y., native.. “We have to make sure that everyone knows what they are doing and how to properly provide 20 level maintenance on the weapons."

The armament shop also provides COB Adder with a mobile small arms team. The team provides its support by traveling to the customer in need. The team offers services ranging from weapons repair, modification, and head space and timing in addition to normal maintenance. The team consists of three soldiers and two small-arms tool boxes which make the turn-around time for the missions much quicker.

“This is a great way for other units to have their weapons checked and not have to bring them to our shop.” said Spc. Joseph Goulart, a small-arms repairer with the 632nd Maint. Co., and a Santa Maria, Calif., native.

Although the nature of missions has been modified to support Operation New Dawn, high quality weapons maintenance will be needed until the very last soldier departs from theater. Soldiers with the 632nd Maint. Co. will continue to execute their mission and provide their services.
