Staff in the Spotlight: Personnel Specialist First Class Corinthian Scott

Meet Personnel Specialist 1st Class (PS1) Corinthian Scott, a Recruit Division Commander (RDC) serving at Recruit Training Command (RTC) Great Lakes, the Navy’s only boot camp.

A native of Houston, Texas, Scott joined the Navy seven years ago seeking greater opportunity and a broader worldview.

“I joined the Navy to travel, be part of a brotherhood and sisterhood, and further my education,” Scott said. “Before the Navy, my first time on a plane was to boot camp, and besides Texas, Louisiana was the only other state I had been to. Being able to serve alongside people from all different walks of life creates a unique connection.”

Assignments in Hawaii, Bahrain, and Texas exposed Scott to new environments, but it was the connections she formed along the way that left the strongest impression.

“One moment that really stood out to me was at one of my commands when a friend of mine thanked me for being me,” she said. “They were going through something and were vulnerable with me, and they mentioned I was someone they could depend on. It made me realize you never know what someone is going through, and that’s why kindness is so important.”

That perspective continues to guide how she approaches both growth and leadership.

“Having humility has helped me succeed in the Navy,” she said. “It’s okay not to know everything, but you can’t leave it that way. Once you realize what you don’t know, you have to take the time to learn it and apply it.”

At RTC, Scott currently serves in the manning office, where she processes incoming Sailors attending RDC “C” school and ensures their transition into training is smooth and efficient. As an RDC, Scott led and trained hundreds of recruits through the challenges of boot camp.

Looking back on that experience, Scott said the most fulfilling part of the job is seeing recruits grow into confident Sailors.

“What I enjoy most is seeing their progression,” she said. “There are so many hours of training and repeating the same things again and again, but once it clicks and they perform with confidence, it’s an unspeakable level of happiness. I’m so proud of the Sailors I’ve trained, and they make me excited to push the next division.”

Her decision to become an RDC also meant confronting a personal challenge—stepping outside of her naturally reserved personality.

“The biggest hurdle for me, at first, was stepping outside my comfort zone,” Scott said. “I’m not shy, but I’ve always kept to myself. I was nonverbal as a child and didn’t start speaking until I was five years old, and even then only with certain people. Becoming an RDC pushed me completely out of that space. Speaking in front of so many recruits was intimidating, but I’ve grown a lot and learned I just need to be myself.”

Moments of connection with recruits continue to reinforce the importance of her role.

“I’m reminded of why my job matters when I take recruits into the computer lab and go over MyPay,” she said. “I make sure they understand their LES, how to read their orders, and where to find resources that will help them throughout their careers. When it clicks for them and you see their confidence start to build—that’s the most rewarding part.”

Scott said her motivation to serve comes from a constant drive to improve.

“What keeps me motivated is the possibility of achieving more,” she said. “I’m always looking for ways to become better and smarter. The Navy gives you so many opportunities to learn, train, and lead. I want to be a leader that Sailors can come to for guidance, and I make sure to celebrate those small victories along the way to recognize that progress.”

Looking ahead, Scott has set ambitious goals for the next phase of her career.

“My goal is to make chief petty officer and go to a special warfare command,” she said. “In the next five years, I could also see myself submitting a package to become a warrant officer. I want to continue leading and inspiring junior Sailors as much as possible.”

Scott continues to support RTC’s mission by ensuring Sailors are prepared, both administratively and professionally, as they take the next steps in their Navy careers.

Training at RTC lasts approximately nine weeks, and all enlisted Sailors begin their Navy careers at the command. More than 40,000 recruits train annually at the Navy’s only boot camp.
