    Partnership Emphasizes Culture Through Automobiles

PORT HUENEME, Calif. — Highlighting the rich culture of California’s lowrider car community, the U.S. Seabee Museum will host its first-ever car show in cooperation with the Smithsonian Institution from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 28, 2026.

The event is part of the Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition, "Lowrider Culture in the United States / Cultura Lowrider en los Estados Unidos," which ran Sept. 13 to Dec. 12, 2025, at the Muzeo Museum and Cultural Center in Anaheim, California, and will continue traveling nationwide through summer 2029.

The family-friendly event is free and open to the public. Free parking will be available at the museum and military ID is not required for entry.

The show will feature a wide variety of vehicles, including lowriders, classic cars, muscle cars and hot rods from both the local community and Seabee service members. One unique vehicle on display will be a customized 1964 Chevrolet Impala SS once owned by Shaquille O’Neal.

The museum will also be open for guests to learn about Seabee history, legacy and the “Can Do” spirit of the “CB” (Construction Battalions) from World War II to today. As part of the Smithsonian exhibit inside the museum, visitors can view 57 historic and contemporary digital prints, watch videos about the lowriding community, and explore an educational cart featuring contemporary objects.

In addition to the vehicles, attendees will have several activities to enjoy. Guests can purchase Seabee-themed merchandise through the Center for Seabees and Facilities Engineering Chief Petty Officer Association, and a taco food truck will be on site.

Lowriders are customized vehicles designed to sit close to the ground and often feature elaborate paintwork and hydraulic systems that allow them to drive on three wheels or perform bouncing movements. The vehicles are deeply rooted in Mexican American culture, with traditions dating back to the post-World War II era.
