NORFOLK, Va. – USS Wasp’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department hosted a cookout for crew members and their families Aug. 26 at Fleet Recreation Park, Norfolk, Va.

The command cookout provided sailors with an opportunity to spend time with their families and build camaraderie with fellow sailors.

“This gives sailors time to relax and bond with shipmates in a non-work environment,” said Wasp MWR Director and "Fun Boss" Becky Creed. “Were doing it for two main reasons; it’s a big morale booster, and it’s a celebration of the hard work the Sailors have done onboard Wasp.”

With music playing and plenty of food to go around, people mingled about, taking time to meet other Wasp families and engage in many of the activities available.

There was a “Chiefs versus enlisted” Tug-O-War competition, a “Khakis versus enlisted” softball game, a pie eating contest, and many other activities to help sailors and their families relax. MWR also gave away several raffle prizes throughout the day.

“There were a lot of family activities and games for kids,” said Petty Officer 1st Class (AW/SW) German Cruz, aviation boatswain’s mate (handling), who attended the event with his 19-year-old daughter Victoria. “This is the first actual command function we’ve had in 18 months. We were able to get away from the ship and have a good time with our families.”

All of the food and activities were setup by Wasp volunteers, families and contracted businesses. This gave Wasp sailors a real chance to relax for a day.

“We had a great time just eating, relaxing and enjoying the food my culinary specialists didn’t have to prepare,” said Petty Officer 1st Class (SW/AW) Marcus Madison, culinary specialist. “I think MWR did a wonderful job setting up the cookout.”
