Brig. Gen. John P. Stanley pays a visit to Soldiers in Lithuania

PABRADĖ, Lithuania — U.S. Army Brig. Gen. John P. Stanley, commanding general of the 7th Mission Support Command and deputy commanding general of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, visited Camp Herkus on Feb. 5, 2026, where he met with key leaders and toured newly constructed facilities. The visit highlighted unit performance and ongoing efforts to improve readiness and quality of life for Soldiers while integrating new warfighting technologies into daily operations. “From a theater perspective, you look at each one of the installations for operating as such, and you think about the readiness of that node to deliver combat power,” said Stanley. “And what do we still need to invest in to make sure that it’s ready?”During the visit, Stanley toured newly completed barracks, a dining facility, and a multifunctional building used by NATO allied troops.

He spoke with service members to gain insight into recent quality-of-life improvements across the installation. The new barracks feature expanded restroom facilities, modern office space, and designated meeting areas. The multifunctional building includes an improved gym, classrooms for unit instruction, and an enhanced USO space where troops can relax and engage in recreational activities.

Pfc. Tia Ruffin, a cook assigned to the 12th Cavalry Regiment, said the new barracks have had a positive impact on her morale. “Moving into the barracks has made it more spacious and more private,” Ruffin said. “Not having to use the restroom outside and being able to use the washrooms ourselves instead of relying on others has made a big difference.”

Spc. Conrado Zuvia, an intelligence analyst with 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, has been stationed at Camp Herkus since September. With winter temperatures in Lithuania averaging minus 5 to minus 20 degrees Celsius (23 to minus 4 Fahrenheit), the transition from containerized housing units to the barracks has been beneficial. “They are an improvement,” Zuvia said. “We no longer have to walk outside in the cold to use the restroom, and in some cases, people’s power would go out in the CHUs.” Harsh weather conditions, including ice, wind chills, and frozen surfaces, previously posed hazards to Soldiers.

Stanley also toured maintenance facilities across the installation, observing Soldiers conducting maintenance on a variety of military vehicles. He visited workshops where troops produce replacement parts in-house using additive manufacturing and computer numerical control machining. Vehicle maintenance remains critical to mission success, ensuring equipment is operational and ready for deployment. Soldiers routinely conduct preventive maintenance checks and services to identify and address issues before missions.

Additionally, Stanley met with leaders from the 510th Regional Support Group, the 83rd Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, and the 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment to review unit performance and discuss opportunities to allocate theater resources more effectively.

“You always want to convey your investment in them to do the job and make sure they understand that’s where our support is needed,” Stanley said. “And making sure that we’re taking care of the people who are here to do the job.”
