Melissa Downey of Lake in the Hills, Ill., was promoted in the Illinois Army National Guard to Chief Warrant Officer 4 on Jan. 11 during a ceremony in Heartland Community College’s Astroth Community Education Center auditorium.
Downey, who is assigned to the Illinois Army National Guard headquarters' Logistics Directorate (G4) has more than 32 years of military experience. She enlisted as a senior in high school in 1993 and spent more than 21 years as an enlisted Soldier rising to the rank of sergeant 1st class before becoming a warrant officer in 2015.
Her overseas assignments include First Cook with the 1244th Transportation Co., Operation Iraqi Freedom - Kuwait, from 2003 to 2004 and Deployed Sexual Assault Response Coordinator, Operation Enduring Freedom - Kuwait in 2014. While deployed in 2014, she became the Theater SARC for 3rd Army under Lt. Gen. James Terry.
Downey works for the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs as a Veteran Service Officer and part time as a mental health therapist. She lives in Lake in the Hills, Illinois, with her daughter, Leah Hiller, 20; son, Luke Hiller, 16, and dog, Toby.
