NAVAL STATION MAYPORT, Florida – Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Delbert D. Black (DDG 119) departed Naval Station Mayport for a regularly scheduled deployment, Jan. 3, 2026.
The ship’s departure comes after months of training, maintenance, and certification events, which ultimately prepared the ship for a multitude of operations.
“The Sailors onboard Delbert D. Black are seasoned professionals, highly trained for global operations,” said Cmdr. Ezra T. Hatch, commanding officer, Delbert D. Black. “Delbert D. Black is combat-ready, and our crew is poised to execute the nation’s tasking in any area needed throughout the globe.”
Delbert D. Black is a multi-mission guided-missile destroyer capable of air warfare (AW), anti-submarine warfare (ASW), naval surface fire support (NSFS), and surface warfare (SUW). The ship carries approximately 300 Sailors.
“Delbert D. Black is ready to fight and win on arrival,” said Capt. Anthony James, commander, Naval Surface Group Southeast. "The crew stands ready to defend our nation and protect global sea lines of communication with our allies and partners.”
Commissioned on Sept. 26, 2020, USS Delbert D. Black is named in honor of the first Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) a legendary enlisted leader who served from 1941 to 1971, through WWII and Vietnam, and established the MCPON role, making the unique honor for an enlisted Sailor’s impact.
