SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany – As Spangdahlem Air Base sets its sights on the future, 52nd Civil Engineer Squadron community planners are turning to those who live, work, and spend time on base for their input.
On Dec. 16, planners will host an open house allowing members of Saber Nation to learn about the Community District Plan and share ideas that could help shape a long-term effort to guide installation development over the next two decades.
The event will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Community Commons, Bldg. 441, and is open to anyone who lives, works or spends time on base, including families, civilian employees and military members.
The session will begin with a short presentation on the planning process, followed by an interactive mapping exercise allowing participants to provide feedback on buildings, roads, parks, housing, retail and recreation, organizers said.
Participants will have the opportunity to voice their thoughts and ideas using sticky notes and pens, marking areas they believe need attention or improvement, said 2nd Lt. Elizabeth Decko, 52nd Civil Engineer Squadron program development officer in charge.
“We want people to come and get a variety of perspectives in our planning and development,” Decko said. “Involving more members of the community, including families, youth and those who use base facilities after duty hours, helps us gain a clearer, more well-rounded understanding of what the base truly needs.”
The Community District Plan, which will serve as the foundation for future development decisions, aims to enhance the quality of life by identifying gaps in services and exploring new ideas for future improvements. With input from residents and workers on base, planners hope to create a shared vision for how the district should evolve in the coming years.
“Sometimes people feel like they don’t have a say in how things are done on a military base, but this is an opportunity to have their voices heard,” said Alison Eubanks, Spangdahlem AB community planner. “Even if they’re not here for the long-term, their feedback can improve the quality of life for the next families who live here.”
