Behind the Mission: Airman 1st Class Daugherty

For Airman 1st Class Carson Daugherty, serving as a firefighter with the Wyoming Air National Guard means being ready for anything; on base, in the community and wherever the mission calls. After just over a year in the Guard, he’s training full-time to become fully certified on the department’s fleet of fire trucks and emergency response equipment.

Each day starts with truck checks, equipment inspections and morning briefings before moving into hands-on training. From computer-based learning to operating specialized vehicles, all this behind-the-scenes training is building him into a deployable firefighter who can respond at a moment’s notice.

While many envision Air Guard firefighters responding only to aircraft emergencies, their work extends well beyond the flight line.

“We’re also out helping the community,” he said. “We watch firework shows, walk through buildings when someone smells something strange, or check for gas leaks. Just making sure everyone feels safe.”

The Guard also gave him a path toward his long-term goal of becoming a civilian firefighter. Tech school provided him with nationally recognized fire certifications, saving him time and money on the competitive civilian side. Daugherty originally joined the 153rd to help him pay for college. However, his experience in the Guard has also given him valuable training toward his long-term goal of becoming a civilian firefighter, in addition to college tuition assistance.

Thank you, A1C Daugherty, for the work you do every day to protect our base, our community and our mission.
