Corporals Course to be mandatory, digital

Starting in fiscal year 2012, Corporals Course will be mandatory for promotion to sergeant, according to All Marine Message 026/10.

“It is important for the Marine Corps as an institution, because we have Marine Corps Institutes and Marines training junior Marines to reinforce the foundations,” said 1st Sgt. Nelson Hidalgo, the first sergeant of Company B., Headquarters Battalion.

“Corporals Course is that foundation for newly-promoted corporals to know how things are supposed to be done.”

The current command-sponsored Corporals Course began last year and is three weeks long.

However, due to the high operations tempo of the Marine Corps, attendance can be difficult, according to ALMAR 026/10.

“Our non-commissioned officers have long been known as the backbone of the Marine Corps,” said Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. James T. Conway in the ALMAR.

“It is our duty to ensure we provide these Marines every educational opportunity, yet there is a gap in the professional military education continuum for our corporals.”

Making the course available as an online non-resident course is one way the Corps is ensuring every corporal can meet this new requirement.

“The reality of Corporals Course is that we can’t have every corporal go through the course because of numbers,” said Hidalgo, a New York native. “So having an online course, even though it is not as ideal as the actual course, it is something for the foundation for the leaders to work on.”

Marines will also be awarded points for their composite score upon completion of either course, starting in 2012, as stated in ALMAR 026/10.

For information on the non-resident Corporals Course, refer to ALMAR 026/10. Lesson plans, student handouts and guidance to conduct a resident course are located on the TECOM website at http: //www.tecom.usmc.mil/default.aspx.
