AL-TANF GARRISON, Syria – On deployment with the 1st Squadron, 113th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Lt. Jorge Sandoval Jr. plans and executes missions outside the wire for 1st platoon, Charlie Troop, and works to create strong, long-lasting ties with Syrian partners to help make operations move smoothly in support of Combined Joint Task Force - Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR).

Only out of college for a handful of months before deployment, he pushes his platoon to the forefront of the fight with excellent mission planning, executing missions with ease, and making his time here at Al-Tanf Garrison (ATG) fly by.

“I spend most of my time mission planning, figuring out just what my commander wants from me and how I can make his life easier, while also helping to make sure that my platoon is taken care of,” said 2nd Lt. Sandoval about what his mission here is.

Sandoval expands on what he considers important to take into account out here in Syria and shows how he bridges the gap between training and execution.

“We train to be the best over here in Charlie Troop, and we do everything in our power to be the best. We train like we are in the field executing, and it pays dividends in the back when we are in the field and we get to work with others.”

Sandoval further explains the mission planning that he does and how that affects the overall mission.

“Planning is really important in how you create and execute your missions. I use and create paths through the terrain, taking into account the physical factors on the ground. If I only think about it from the mapping system, I won't be taking into account every possibility and may leave my team exposed, and we can’t afford that here.”

Sandoval explains how working with Syrian partners is beneficial for the CJTF-OIR coalition.

“I feel as if they help us just as much as we help them. With their experience and how they tackle issues, we find better and easier ways to do things. But on the contrary, we also teach them a lot of valuable skills to fight off the enemies that they have within and make Syria a better place for their families and children.”

Through his unwavering spirit, resolve, and leadership, Sandoval shows what it means to be a leader in the U.S. Army today.
