Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, leadership recognized the 250th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps with a cake cutting ceremony Nov. 5.
Navy Capt. Andy Henwood, commander, DLA Distribution Susquehanna, presided over the event that honored the 250-year legacy of the Marine Corps.
“Happy birthday, Marines. In my book, no one does it better,” Henwood said. “I’m proud of the fact that the Navy and Marine Corps are inexplicably linked, dating back to our founding 250 years ago, continuing to present day.”
Marine Corps Master Sgt. Shelly Nipper, operations and quality control senior noncommissioned officer in charge, DLA Distribution Susquehanna, served as the emcee for the ceremony. As part of the ceremony traditions, she shared the 250th Marine Corps Birthday Message video and a message from the Commandant of the Marine Corps in honor of the 250th birthday.
Nipper invited the guest of honor, Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Thomas Hayes, along with the oldest Marine, David Demmy and youngest Marine, Alex Spencer, to join Henwood for the traditional cutting of the cake.
“The cake cutting ceremony is a tradition steeped in symbolism. The passing of the cake from the oldest to youngest is a recognition of the wisdom and experience passed down through generations. There is also the camaraderie and bonds that unite all Marines during the celebration of our birthday,” Hayes said. “As we share the cake, let us acknowledge the shared commitment we all have toward supporting our nation’s defense."
Demmy graduated from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, California in 1982 and served in multiple detachments throughout his nine-year service. Demmy began working at DLA Distribution Susquehanna as an inventory supply technician earlier this year.
Spencer graduated recruit training from Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina in 2020 and served as a field artillery cannoneer with 11th Marine Regiment aboard Camp Pendleton. Spencer left active duty in 2024 and is completing his service in the Individual Ready Reserve. Spencer joined DLA Distribution Susquehanna earlier this year and was recently promoted to a supply technician.
After the cake cutting, Hayes spoke about the important role DLA Distribution plays in the operational readiness of the Marine Corps.
“Throughout the course of our illustrious history, one constant has been critical, and that is the need for supplies, equipment and sustainment,” Hayes said. “Your dedication ensures Marines have what they need, when they need it, and where they need it to accomplish any mission. From class nine to MREs, DLA’s impact is felt on every battlefield and every operating environment.”
In closing, Hayes emphasized the significance of this birthday and the importance of interoperability.
“Today we celebrate 250 years of honor, courage and commitment. We honor the Marines who have served and sacrificed. We also recognize our vital partnership shared with DLA in support of national defense.”
