Wyoming Air National Guard Breaks Ground on New Vehicle Maintenance Facility

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Members of the 153rd Airlift Wing gathered Friday at the Wyoming Air National Guard base in Cheyenne to officially break ground on a long-awaited Vehicle Maintenance and Aerospace Ground Equipment (VM/AGE) facility Nov. 16, 2025.

The new 27,000-square-foot project will provide modern workspaces for vehicle maintenance, aircraft support, and training, replacing facilities that are more than 45 years old and no longer adequate for day-to-day operations or wartime training.

“This facility will change the way our vehicle maintenance and aircraft support shops sustain our base and mission requirements, and it will serve our great nation by providing a state-of-the-art space in which to train Airmen, maintain vehicles, and support aircraft,” said Lt. Col. Daniel Koch, commander of the 153rd Civil Engineer Squadron.

Brig. Gen. Barry Deibert, Air Component Commander of the Wyoming National Guard, reflected on the decades-long effort to bring the project to fruition.

“Once it was funded, there was a whole lot more work that went into it to get it to the spot you’re looking at today,” he said. “It’s a great day for the Air National Guard, and I’m very happy for everyone here. We’re breaking ground on a building that’s way overdue, and there is more to come for this base and this wing.”

The VM/AGE facility will feature vehicle maintenance administration and training areas, maintenance bays, space for refueler maintenance, an aircraft support shop, storage, and both a parking shed and heated parking area for vehicles. Leaders emphasized that the facility will not only improve operational efficiency but also enhance Airmen safety and training capabilities.

Airmen and leadership then participated in the ceremonial groundbreaking, shovels in hand, marking the official start of construction. The base anticipates the project will significantly enhance the 153rd Airlift Wing’s readiness and mission support capabilities for decades to come.
