KADENA AIR BASE, Japan –U.S. Air Force F-35A Lightning IIs assigned to the 4th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron, deployed to Kadena Air Base, launched from Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, Japan, during a simulated combat mission during BH 26-1, Nov. 5, 2025.
The mission showcased the 18th Wing’s ability to rapidly generate airpower from alternate locations—an essential element of agile combat employment. Airmen from across the wing executed tasks outside their career fields in a while operating in a contested, high-tempo environment,
“We have Airmen from fuels, weapons and avionics all working together for this mission,” said Senior Airman Gregorio Garcia, 4th Fighter Generation Squadron maintenance crew chief. “Training alongside different specialties shows that we can generate airpower in any environment, anytime we’re called.”
BH 26-1 tested the wing’s ability to deploy, sustain and launch aircraft with smaller, more flexible teams. Multi-capable Airmen concepts continue to shape how the Air Force prepares for future conflicts—requiring proficiency, speed and adaptability.
MCAS Futenma, situated between Camp Foster and Kadena Air Base—provides premier aviation support for the U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific. The installation frequently hosts joint, combined and allied operations that strengthen U.S.-Japan interoperability and reinforce stability across the Indo-Pacific.
“Exercises like this give our junior Marines the chance to work with joint partners and a variety of aircrafts,” said USMC Capt. John Butler, Headquarters Squadron air traffic control facility officer in charge. “It opens their eyes to new scenarios, helps them learn to plan ahead and builds the competence they need to excel.”
The exercise simulated real-world combat demands, including rapid launches and quick-turn maintenance operations. Every sortie tested the wing’s ability to operate under pressure while maintaining precision and safety.
Together, Kadena’s Airmen and MCAS Futenma’s Marines continue to demonstrate that the United States remains ready to deter aggression and defend peace alongside Japan and other regional partners.
