SECWAR Visits Korean DMZ, Underscores Peace Through Strength

U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth visited the Demilitarized Zone on Monday, Nov. 3, observing the fortified buffer between North Korea and South Korea and reaffirming the U.S. commitment to deterring aggression on the peninsula. The visit highlighted the Trump administration's "peace through strength" doctrine and the ongoing commitment of the United Nations Command to maintain the 1953 Armistice Agreement which suspended Korean War hostilities.
Hegseth was accompanied by a high-profile military delegation, including his South Korean counterpart Minister Ahn Gyu-back; United Nations Command, U.S. Forces Korea and Combined Forces Command Commander Gen. Xavier T. Brunson; and INDOPACOM Commander Adm. Sam Paparo.
The group visited Observation Post Ouellette, the closest United Nations Command observation post to the Military Demarcation Line, before proceeding to the blue huts of "conference row" in the Joint Security Area, where dialogue between the two Koreas and UNC takes place. There, they observed the work of the United Nations Military Armistice Commission members and soldiers of the United Nations Command Security Battalion.
Joint Duty Officer Lt. Cmdr. Tim Creen emphasized the critical role of UNCMAC along the length of the DMZ.
“The core mission of the United Nations Command Military Armistice Commission is to implement the terms of the Armistice Agreement to ensure peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula,” Creen said.
“It is a privilege to work in the DMZ with service members from a range of nations including the Republic of Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden and Switzerland.”
UNCSB Commander LTC Daniel Blankenhorn highlighted the unique nature of commanding a combined U.S.-South Korean battalion which operates within sight of North Korea.
"The United Nations Command Security Battalion soldiers here are the first line of defense for the command and serve to deter hostile action to ensure the JSA remains an area for strategic dialogue.” Blankenhorn said. "They embody the strength and unity of our great alliance.”
