A Community Fitness Focus: The JBLM Half-Marathon

Joint Base Lewis-McChord recently held a half-marathon near McChord’s Heritage Hill at JBLM, Washington, Sept. 20, 2025. The event’s participation was open to service members across JBLM as well as community members and included trophies for first-place winners and medallions for all participants who completed the race.

“I had a good time running, it was really fun, and it was a great turnout,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Hector Salas, 627th Air Base Group commander support staff. “I am currently training for a full marathon, so I was doing the race as practice to get my mileage up and it was really cool to see the whole JBLM community come out to the McChord side for it!”

The half-marathon had 750 participants from over nine agencies and over 65 volunteers including Air Force and Army service members as well as a number of JBLM Morale, Welfare and Recreation employees.

“Fitness and comprehensive readiness are of great importance across all branches of the military,” said Lt. Col. Rena Sandgren, 627th Force Support Squadron commander. “An event like the JBLM Half-Marathon serves to highlight this commitment, offering an accessible and engaging avenue for service members and community members alike to prioritize their physical well-being and warrior ethos. It reinforces the understanding that physical fitness is not merely a personal pursuit, but a critical element of mission readiness.”

Sandgren also highlighted that more fitness and community-driven events like the JBLM Half-Marathon are already in the planning process for 2026.

“The CY26 Sports and Fitness calendar is filled with a diverse array of engaging events designed to promote physical health across a broad spectrum of interests and abilities,” said Sandgren. “These initiatives extend beyond running, to include activities such as weightlifting, team sports, and other fitness modalities. The goal is to provide a holistic approach to wellness, ensuring that all members of the JBLM community have opportunities to pursue their fitness goals in a supportive and motivating environment.”
