Washington — U.S. Army Chaplain (Maj. Gen.) William Green Jr., the 26th Chief of Chaplains of the United States Army, visited the District of Columbia National Guard Armory on Oct. 27, 2025.
He was accompanied by Chaplain(Capt.) Steve Anoa‘i and Sgt. Maj. Meaghan B. Simmons, who serves as the Sergeant Major for the Strategy, Proponency, and Resources Directorate, Office of the Chief of Chaplains. Upon arrival, they were greeted by Chaplain (Col.) Vincent A. Cummings, senior Army and Command Chaplain for the D.C. National Guard, and Chaplain (Col.) Brad Hanna, Chief of Army National Guard Religious Affairs, National Guard Bureau.
Green began his tour of the D.C. Armory with a briefing from the D.C. J9 Joint Care Team. The briefing highlighted the team’s mission to support service members through family, religious, and medical resources, as well as through direct interaction and encouragement with troops patrolling the city. The J9 team’s mission includes checking on Soldiers’ physical and mental well-being and advocating for any resources or assistance that they may need.
Soon after the J9 briefing, Green was introduced to members of the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Tactical Operations Command. U.S. Army Sgt. Terrence White, a Tactical Operations Center radio telephone operator with the D.C. Joint Task Force, recalled Green’s witty anecdote about the changing weather in the area.
“He told me‘A few years ago I was here in D.C and wanted to run around the National Mall but it was so cold I ran in the gym,’” said White.
White then informed Green how the D.C. Joint Task Force command is taking care of its service members.
“We have soldiers from three delta states– Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama–that we were getting cold weather gear orders to make sure that they were properly dressed out there,” White said. “The temperature has had a significant drop and we're ensuring those Soldiers are prepared for the conditions.”
White added, “I think the conversation was a great one. He was very approachable. He wanted to know how we’re tracking soldiers on each mission where they are patrolling and how we are patrolling”.
Chaplain (Maj.) Edward Lartey, a D.C. Army National Guard member supporting the D.C. Safe and Beautiful mission, took Green to visit troops patrolling the area.
“We discussed where our chaplains are located and how they’re providing coverage in those operational areas,” said Lartey. “We went to Union Station, where Col. Larry Doane, commander of the Joint Task Force – District of Columbia, showed him the areas of operations and patrol in addition to explaining the significance of the National Guard’s presence in the area and impacts to beautification projects in D.C.
Green also joined one of the patrol circulations visiting soldiers posted at Union Station and Gallery Place Metro Station.
“One of the main reasons for his visit was to observe how commanders interact with soldiers, the connection, the bond, getting to know them personally, and asking questions,” Lartey explained.“The memorable moments are how he connected with Soldiers from different areas.”
