WASHINGTON — On Oct. 22, the District of Columbia National Guard welcomed its seventh Command Chief Warrant Officer, Chief Warrant Officer 5 (CW5) Robert Gibson, Sr., assumed responsibility from CW5 Bernard Aguon during a change of responsibility ceremony held at the D.C. Armory.
CW5 Gibson joins the D.C. National Guard with more than 36 years of distinguished military service, holding positions in M-Day, Title 32 Military Technician, and Title 32 Active Guard Reserve (AGR) capacities. He most recently served as the State Command Chief Warrant Officer for the Florida National Guard, responsible for recommendations on matters affecting Warrant Officers.
“It is a true honor to join the D.C. National Guard as the seventh Command Chief Warrant Officer,” CW5 Gibson said. “As a career National Guard Soldier, I’m particularly excited to be surrounded by the unique and patriotic ‘Capital Guardian’ culture. That direct connection to each D.C. Guardsman has to protect our nation is deeply inspiring, and I look forward to contributing to that vital mission—one rooted in civic cooperation, public trust, and the resilience that defines our force.”
CW5 Aguon, who is completing his tenure as Command Chief Warrant Officer, welcomed his successor with confidence.
“On behalf of the District of Columbia National Guard Command Team, I am pleased to welcome CW5 Robert Gibson as our 7th Command Chief Warrant Officer,” Aguon said. “CW5 Gibson’s broad experience, gained from roles across multiple states and at the national level, uniquely positions him to lead us amid rapid technological change. I am confident he will enhance our warrant officer development programs with innovation and provide the expert leadership needed to fulfill our mission and strengthen public trust in the Guard’s service to the community.”
Throughout his extensive career, CW5 Gibson served in a variety of key roles, including Geospatial Engineer, Joint Operations Center Plans Officer, Multimedia Technician, State Safety Manager, and State Investigating Officer. He is a Master Resilience Trainer, graduate of the Army Instructor Course, and a Certified Army National Guard Accident Investigator. Gibson entered the National Guard in 1989 at age 17 and has deployed multiple times in support of overseas operations, including Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait (1991), Operation Joint Forge in the Balkans (2000), and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan (2012).
Additionally, he also brings extensive experience working with local and state emergency management leaders, state organizations, and civil authorities in both county and state Emergency Operations Centers.
“My leadership philosophy is a simple formula: People First equals Readiness,” CW5 Gibson said. “Investing in our Soldiers and Airmen—fostering their growth and well-being—is the foundation for a combat-ready force built on strong values of standards, discipline, integrity, and resilience.”
Building on the foundation established by his predecessor, CW5 Gibson said one of his top priorities will be strengthening and growing the Warrant Officer Corps through targeted accessions and professional development.
“We all can mentor others—the key is to also be open to receiving mentorship,” he said. “That’s how we develop not only skilled, ready warfighters, but also stronger communities grounded in cooperation, mutual respect, and trust. The D.C. National Guard exceeds the standard every single day. The District, nation, and the world sees it and I’m personally proud to be part of it.”
CW5 Gibson holds a master’s degree in Adult Education (Instructional Design), a Bachelor of Science in Military Studies, and an associate’s degree in Drafting and Design. He is a graduate of the National Geospatial Intelligence School and the Warrant Officer Senior Service Education Course at Fort Novosel, Alabama. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with three bronze stars, and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
“To the Soldiers and leaders of the D.C. National Guard, I’m deeply honored to join such a dedicated team,” CW5 Gibson said. “Together, we’ll strengthen competence, trust, and resilience across the organization—fostering civic cooperation with our community while remaining ‘Always Ready, Always There.’”
