BARNES AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Massachusetts-Over 180 members of the 104th Fighter Wing participated in a Project Safe Guard (PSG) gun safety class over the September drill at Barnes Air National Guard Base, Westfield, Mass.

Participants learned about safe gun security and storage, and focused on how to keep the entire family safe with guns in the home. Participants received a free biometric miniature gun safe for successfully completing the class.

Michelle Tarca, the 104th Fighter Wing’s Director of Psychological Health, was thrilled about the positive outcomes of the class.

“The class appeared to be a great success,” Tarca said. “The training is backed by research, statistics, and evidence-based findings, and we’re very grateful to Project Safe Guard for engaging with 185 of our Barnestormers.”

PSG is an evidence-based program developed for the National Guard by researchers at Rutgers University’s New Jersey Gun Violence Research Center, Anduril LLC, and the Uniformed Services University. Their training aims to prevent harmful behaviors by providing facts on suicide prevention, the impact of secure firearm storage on harmful behaviors, common misperceptions of firearm security, and methods of secure storage.

Tarka mentioned the importance of this class and why she wanted it here at Barnes.

“They talked about relevant and real time information such as child safety and intimate violence prevention. An emphasis was put on home safety and voluntary ways to increase secure storage of firearms,” said Tarka. “Not on taking firearms away or infringing on second amendment rights.”

PSG emphasizes everyday habits that can help prevent firearm injury or death and in home and out of home storage options.

Project Safe Guard is available for free to all Air National Guard Bases, and are likely to return to Barnes in the future.
