KABUL – An Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents in Paktiya province Sunday while in pursuit of a Haqqani facilitator for foreign fighter and Haqqani camps located in Sperah district of neighboring Khost province.

As the security force moved toward the targeted compound north of Mitah in Dzadran district, airborne reconnaissance identified two men moving along a tree line displaying hostile intent toward the ground assault force. An air weapons team engaged both men and it was assessed they were killed.

After the area was secure, Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the compound peacefully and then secured the area. After questioning all of the residents at the scene, the security force detained the suspected insurgents. The security force discovered multiple grenades at the scene.

“The Haqqani Network relies on their foreign fighter facilitation to carry out their attacks,” said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. “Afghan and coalition forces have focused their efforts capturing the leaders of this terrorist organization.”

The security force protected the women and children throughout the search.
