NORFOLK, VA. (Oct 09, 2025) – On Oct. 13, 1775, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution creating the Continental Navy, officially establishing what would become the United States Navy. At the time, the 13 colonies were locked in the Revolutionary War against Britain, the world’s leading naval power. While American forces fought on land, they knew victory would also depend on challenging British control of the seas.
Two hundred and fifty years later, the U.S. Navy stands as one of the most powerful maritime forces in the world, having played key roles in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War, World Wars I and II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and ongoing operations across the globe.
To commemorate this historic milestone, the Navy hosted a weekend-long event that culminated in a spectacular event aboard USS George H. W. Bush (CVN 77) on Sunday, attended by President Donald Trump. USS Gonzalez (DDG 66) was among the select ships invited to participate, sailing alongside USS Mason (DDG 87), USS Donald Cook (DDG 75), USS Delbert D. Black (DDG 119), USS Cole (DDG 67), USS Farragut (DDG 99), and USS Iowa (SSN 797).
The demonstration featured Navy SEALs fast-roping from helicopters, aerial maneuvers by various naval aircraft, and a live-fire exercise showcasing the Navy’s precision and readiness — a fitting tribute to 250 years of maritime excellence. The day before the review, Vice Adm. Doug Perry, commander of U.S. Second Fleet (COMSECONDFLT), flew aboard USS Gonzalez to meet Sailors and recognize outstanding performance. He presented special Department of Defense coins to Sailors from multiple divisions for their “Beyond the Call” actions in recent shipboard casualty responses that ensured Gonzalez remained operational during the underway. During the visit, Vice Adm. Perry, along with Commanding Officer, Cmdr. Michael A. Schenk, participated in the meritorious advancement of Hospital Corpsman Second Class William VanOrden and Logistics Specialist Second Class Justice under the Meritorious Advancement Program (MAP), happily assisting them with uniform regulations by presenting their new rank tabs and pins.
Schenk highlighted the importance of the Navy and its role for the United States: “I’ll reference the Navy’s statement as I think it captures the overall message well - “The Navy 250 Titans of the Sea Presidential Review showcased the Navy’s unmatched capabilities at sea. America is a Maritime Nation. For 250 years, we have sailed the globe in defense of freedom. Today and every day, nearly 100 ships and submarines are underway or deployed with the world’s most advanced naval aircraft patrolling the skies, forcing our adversaries to face a persistent reality - a fight with the U.S. Navy would be costly and ultimately unwinnable.”
Reflecting on Gonzalez’s participation in this event, Cmdr. Schenk added: This was my first underway since taking command of Gonzalez. It allowed me to observe all aspects of ship operations, from day-to-day routine items to multiple live firing exercises. Not only was the ship back to sea after an in-port maintenance period, but it also allowed every member of the crew, in every rating, to truly show how they supported accomplishing the ship’s mission. The amount of concentrated firepower employed by participating vessels and aircraft during the Titans of the Sea Presidential Review was impressive to witness, and I’m proud of Gonzalez’ professional execution.
Command Master Chief Ayanna Gregg emphasized the event’s significance for the nation and the Navy: This occasion marks 250 years of trials and success for our great country. 250 years of freedom and democracy worldwide while fighting to preserve it for all. Our Navy has proven it can persevere across 2.5 centuries. With the technical proficiency and professionalism necessary to demonstrate greatness and global dominance, that is definitely worth celebrating.
Gregg added that participating in the milestone carried deep personal meaning: “As a Sailor who has served in the U.S. Navy for almost 20 years, our participation in our birthday celebration is an honor. The Navy 250 Titan Sea Power Presidential Review is important as it showcases what our Navy can do to support our nation in times of concern. It reminds the American people and me that our Sailors possess the skill, training, and professional expertise to keep them safe and sound each night. The U.S. Navy is equipped to remain a force for good, embodying honor, courage, and commitment with each opportunity to pursue justice. Being a member of the Gonzalez Team, putting forward the effort to practice until we get it right, working until the mission is successful, and showing off our skills to America, makes me proud to continue to go beyond the call!”
As USS Gonzalez and her crew took part in this once-in-a-generation celebration, they honored 250 years of naval heritage and the strength, dedication, and professionalism that continue to define the U.S. Navy today.
USS Gonzalez (DDG 66) is homeported in Naval Station Norfolk and is part of Destroyer Squadron 22 under Carrier Strike Group 10, led by USS George H. W. Bush (CVN 77).
