FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. - U.S Army Maj. Gen. Scott M. Naumann, commanding general of the 10th Mountain Division, transferred authority of Joint Task Force-Southern Border (JTF-SB) to Maj. Gen. David W. Gardner, commanding general of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), during a transfer of authority ceremony at Fort Huachuca, Ariz., Oct. 10, 2025.

The ceremony highlighted the deliberate transition of mission responsibility and the reaffirmation of JTF-SB’s continued commitment to mission ownership, readiness, and collaboration in support of operations along the southern border.

“Transfers of authority are important military ceremonies marking the transition of mission responsibility from one command element to another,” said Gen. Gregory M. Guillot, commanding general of the U.S. Northern Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command. “They're indicative of more than a simple legal handover, but reflect completion of a conditioned space process of mission ownership.”

Guillot recognized the dedication and close partnership of both the 10th Mountain Division and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), highlighting their shared commitment to mission success.

“President Trump says often that the U.S. has never had a more secure border. This is obviously due to the phenomenal efforts of Customs and Border Protection, but in support of CBP, Maj. Gen. Naumann and Command Sgt. Maj. Johnson's approach to teaming with the U.S. Border Patrol certainly contributed a great deal and helped pave the way for mission success that the agents, soldiers and Marines achieved day after day.”

These service members set the foundation for a seamless transition as the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) assumes responsibility.

“Today marks a pivotal moment for the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) as we embark on our next rendezvous with destiny, leading this important and essential mission,” said Gardner. “We assume this new role with clear eyed resolve and the motivation to continue building on what has come before us. We know the demands of this operation. We will rise to meet each challenge and we will execute and support this mission.”

As the JTF-SB colors were passed from the outgoing commander to the incoming commander, the ceremony symbolized both continuity and renewal honoring past achievement while looking ahead to the challenges of the next rotation. The event reflected the enduring commitment of soldiers and leaders to uphold the mission with professionalism, discipline and unity of effort.

“They understand that success is measured not in headlines, but in quiet results, the kind that make the nation safer every single day,” said Naumann. “We look forward to watching you take this mission to the next level, as I know you and the Screaming Eagle team will.”

The ceremony concluded with leaders from both divisions and representatives from U.S Customs and Border Protection reaffirming their shared commitment to safeguarding the nation’s southern border. As the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) assumes authority, JTF-SB will continue to strengthen coordination, readiness, and support across the border.

“Best wishes and a job well done to the 10th Mountain Division. The 101st Airborne Division begins its rendezvous with destiny, ready to build upon ours and the 10th Mountain legacy,” said Gardner. “Air assault, climb to glory, and we have the watch.”
