September is National Suicide Prevention Month.
At Shaw Air Force Base, we recognize that suicide prevention is a year-round mission, but this month especially, we’re highlighting the voices of those making a direct impact.
Meet Ms. Erin Bell, a Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) Victim Advocate and Army Reservist with 19 years of service and three overseas tours. She is one of the many behind-the-scenes champions working every day to support survivors, build resilience among Team Shaw, and foster a culture of trust, healing, and hope.
Her work with survivors of sexual assault goes hand-in-hand with suicide prevention. Many survivors face overwhelming emotions—like isolation, depression, and hopelessness—that are risk factors for suicide. By providing confidential advocacy, trauma-informed care, and connection to resources, Ms. Bell empowers individuals to take steps toward recovery.
“Honoring those we’ve lost means ensuring no one suffers in silence. Suicide awareness isn’t just about one month—it’s about making mental health a priority every day.” said Ms. Bell.
Let’s keep the conversation going and stand together to create a safer, more supportive Shaw community.
