Fire Prevention Week: Proclamation to the 35th FW community
MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan – The 35th Civil Engineer Squadron (CES) kicked off the beginning of Fire Prevention Week 2025 by signing a proclamation at Misawa Air Base, Japan, Oct. 3, 2025.
This year’s national theme focuses on lithium-ion battery safety, highlighting the importance of educating the community on proper use, storage and disposal to prevent fires before they start. By raising awareness, the campaign reinforces that protecting Airmen, families and infrastructure is essential to sustaining the 35th Fighter Wing’s (FW) combat readiness.
“Come join us and our Japanese partners as we showcase our fire trucks and equipment,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Christopher Edington, 35th CES assistant chief for protection. “Food, drinks and fun provided!”
Throughout the week, the 35th CES Fire & Emergency Services will host a series of events including an open house, a base parade, live fire demonstrations, a fire muster competition and a community bowling event with Sparky the Fire Dog. Each activity emphasizes fire prevention education and emergency preparedness to build a safer, more resilient base community.
Fire Prevention Week is observed annually during the week of Oct. 9 to honor the legacy of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which claimed hundreds of lives and destroyed thousands of buildings. Established as a national observance in 1925, it stands as the longest-running public health and safety campaign in U.S. history, dedicated to raising awareness and preventing future tragedies through education and preparedness.
This year’s motto, “Charge into fire safety,” highlights the 35th FW’s commitment to prevention and preparedness, encouraging the Misawa community to take an active role in protecting themselves and others. These efforts build the strong safety foundation needed to keep the 35th FW ready to deliver airpower at any time.
