TARANTO, Italy – The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Roosevelt (DDG 80) arrived in Taranto, Italy for its first scheduled port visit, Sept. 21, 2025.
“This port visit highlights the value of a strong partnership between the U.S. and Italian maritime forces,” said Cmdr. Jared Carlson, commanding officer of the USS Roosevelt.
“As the Forward-Deployed Naval Forces-Europe (FDNF-E) destroyer assigned to Commander Task Force 65, the Roosevelt team is excited to show the world her relentless warrior ethos and showcase our ship’s motto, taken from President Roosevelt’s coined phrase of ‘arsenal of democracy’,” said Carlson.
Roosevelt and her crew are no strangers to the European theater. The ship has deployed to the U.S. Naval Forces Europe (NAVEUR) area of operations from previous patrols in support of U.S., allied and partner interests.
“The crew is trained to operate and combat challenges in the European theater throughout the deployment,” said Carlson. “We look forward to participating in a variety of multinational maritime activities and operations alongside our allied nations in this theater.”
USS Roosevelt Sailors had the opportunity to learn and embrace the rich history and culture in southern Italy. The port visit also provides the opportunity for increased interoperability among forces, while building cultural understanding and trust.
