Andersen Air Force Base, Guam – 36th Wing Airmen, supervisors, first sergeants and commanders participated in a government issue party in support of wing-wide efforts to clean-up unaccompanied housing and improve quality of life and safety for Airmen residing in on-base dormitories, Sept. 24, 2025.

The Palau and Rota dorms were recently awarded contracts valued at a combined total of $71 million for upgrades and renovation projects. In the meantime, efforts like these serve to improve Airmen’s day-to-day by clearing storage rooms, pressure washing high-traffic areas, and beautify landscaping for the Saipan, Tinian and Kosrae Hall dorms.

“It was really good that leadership showed up,” said Airman 1st Class Tucker Welch, 36th Civil Engineer Squadron electrical systems apprentice and Kosrae Hall dorm chief. “Having the support from the people that are teaching us how to do our jobs and having them participate was a good feeling.”

While taking care of unaccompanied housing was overarching goal, teamwork was at the forefront of the event.

“We had a lot of stuff damaged by Typhoon Mawar,” said Alvin Pangelinan, 36th Civil Engineer Squadron unaccompanied housing dorm manager. “We took this time to proactively arrange proper disposal of unserviceable items that were damaged and stored after the typhoon.”

Typhoon Mawar caused nearly $9.7 billion in damage at Andersen Air Force Base in 2023, with nearly 500 facilities sustaining damage and more than 100 requiring significant repairs.

“We wanted all the servicemembers and leadership to work together,” Pangelinan said. “It really does help with morale to see everybody come out with the same common interest and take the steps to make the servicemembers’ homes better.”

To add to the clean-up, the dorms’ dayrooms received upgrades and new amenities to increase morale and interaction.

“We got some new massage chairs and foosball tables,” Welch said. “Some dorms also got pool tables.”

“It was really good that the [36th] Wing gave us more amenities to be able to decompress after a long day of work,” Welch added.

According to Pangelinan, there has been an increase in foot traffic since the new amenities have been installed.

“We wanted to make the dayrooms more servicemember-friendly,” Pangelinan said. “We wanted to create a space where every servicemember can meet, use the massage chairs, watch TV or even use the karaoke machine. Since we’ve had the new amenities installed, we’ve had more people come in and the foot traffic has been increasing.”

Team Andersen dorm managers plan to add more amenities as the dorms undergo more upgrades, and they plan to make GI parties a quarterly event to improve quality of life for unaccompanied Airmen.
