Fort Rucker, Ala. - Soldiers moving into the Allen Heights area on Fort Rucker can expect updated quarters as renovations improve the homes.

Corvias, the public-private partner company that manages housing on Fort Rucker is renovating the homes in the Allen Heights housing area, bringing requested updates and improvements for military families. These medium-scope renovations are currently scheduled for homes that are not actively occupied, so as Soldiers and families move out, Corvias renovates them before moving a new family in. Homes are being renovated in blocks of around 20 homes at a time, with half having the old features removed while the other half have new features installed.

“We’re doing 285 of these homes and we’ve completed 20 so far. We expect to be completed within the next 2 or 3 years,”said Heather Windham, assistant operations director for Corvias.

Looking at the renovated homes, the new features not only improve the home, but alter the floorplan as well. In the kitchen area a bar is being removed, opening the kitchen up to the living/dining area giving the home a larger, more open feel. The kitchens are also getting a facelift with new countertops, and stainless steel appliances. The new gas stoves also feature a popular air fryer mode.

Bathrooms are also receiving special attention, with much of the bathroom being totally stripped out. New sinks and toilets are being installed, and the bathroom’s tub is being redone.
“They’re installing a new insert in the tub, and the cabinets are going back in with new sinks and toilets,” said Windham.
In the master bathroom the shower is being completely replaced as well.

Throughout the entire house new LED lighting and ceiling fans are being installed to improve the lighting in the homes while making them more energy efficient.

Throughout the entire house, the carpeting, vinyl sheet flooring, and vinyl tile are all being stripped out.

“This is just something that needs to be done. We discussed with the Army doing renovations to get rid of carpet in housing. That’s usually a concern with the residents as they want homes without carpet,” Windham said.

The floors of all renovated homes will instead be wall to wall hard surface luxury vinyl flooring that resembles wood floors.

“This will make it easier for the residents to keep it clean and reduce allergens as well,” Windham said. “There will be no carpets in the bedrooms either.”

These floors in addition to being more resistant to wear, spills, and stains than carpets are also more modular in their installation. So damage to individual panels can be replaced without needing to refloor the entire room.

Finally the windows are being replaced as well. While the current windows are double-paned, the seal on many windows breaks down over time releasing the inert gas inside. “Over the years with double paned windows the gas leaks out and condensation forms in the windows causing them to fog. So we’re getting them repaired and replaced as needed,” said Windham.

Renovations are ongoing, and incoming families can contact Corvias at (334) 440-8988 for more information.
