The Army has a long history of communicating about Army acquisition. In December 1960, the first issue of “Army Research and Development” magazine was published by the Army Research Office. The monthly publication served as a platform for sharing advancements in Army technology and logistics. In 1980, the publication was placed under the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Research, Development and Acquisition (ASARDA) and renamed “Army RD&A.” In 2000, when the ASARDA was renamed the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology (ASA(ALT)), the publication changed once again, this time landing on “Army AL&T.”
Over the past 65 years, the magazine has evolved and served as the premier publication for the Army acquisition, logistics and technology community, winning multiple awards including the APEX Award for Publication Excellence (2012); the Army’s Keith L. Ware Public Affairs Competition for best magazine-format publication (2012); the Bronze Anvil Award from the Public Relations Society of America in the Magazine category (2012); the Secretary of the Army Award for Editor of the Year (2013); the MarCom Platinum Industry Award (2018); and the MarCom Platinum Award for most outstanding publication (2023).
As the Army leans forward to be more streamlined and efficient, changes are underway. In July 2025, “Army AL&T” sunset with the Summer 2025 issue being the final edition. But as the saying goes when one door closes, another opens.
I am pleased to announce, “Behind the Frontlines: Enabling the Warfighter,” an all-online outlet consisting of exclusive and partner-created content focusing on Army acquisition processes, procedures, capabilities, services, equipment and the workforce. “Behind the Frontlines” will be able to serve the Army acquisition community in a more timely manner, sharing the latest acquisition news from across the enterprise by providing rolling updates, senior leader commentary, videos and more.
“Behind the Frontlines” will emphasize the Army Acquisition Workforce (AAW), connecting the dots between the acquisition community and the Army’s capabilities, services and equipment.
Consisting of approximately 30,000 professionals, both civilian and military, the AAW has the responsibility of providing Soldiers with what they need to complete their mission successfully. From scientists, to engineers, to program managers, it is important to tell the AAW story and hear from those behind the frontlines delivering capabilities to our Soldiers, and we want to hear from you. Submit your story at https://asc.army.mil/submissions.
“Behind the Frontlines” will feature the following topics:
If the Soldier wears it, carries it or operates it, the AAW is responsible for it. Join us in telling the story of an AAW that is innovative, ready, dedicated and professional. If you have subscribed previously, we’ve automatically enrolled you in a “Behind the Frontlines” subscription. If you’re new to us, subscribe for free at https://asc.army.mil/subscribe and be sure to follow “Behind the Frontlines” on our website and on social media.
