JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. – The 1st Combat Camera Squadron hosted exercise TacRAT 2025, emphasizing training with small unit tactics, weapons proficiency, combat fitness and operational documentation in high-stress, simulated environments at Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina, Sept. 15 - 19, 2025.
Over the course of five days, TacRAT evaluated and enhanced the tactical proficiency and expeditionary mindset of Airmen through a series of stressful scenarios including operations, marksmanship, close quarter battle, chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defense training and a final culmination event covering the entirety of training.
“For our newer members, TacRAT builds familiarity and confidence with our weapon systems, gear, tactical combat casualty care and team drills," said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Raymond Geoffroy, 1 CTCS commander. “For our leaders, it’s building their ability to lead small teams under stressful combat scenarios where they can survive and thrive”.
TacRAT 2025 differed from previous ones by emphasizing the importance of tactics, reinforcing the warrior ethos and mission preparedness through immersive, hands-on training in realistic combat scenarios.
“TacRAT 2025 is focused more on tactics than camera operation,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. William Rosado, 1 CTCS aerial combat camera craftsman. “This helps our team build a foundation of skills needed to be successful as a combat camera professional, such as tactical movements, CQB and weapons familiarization.”
Combat camera professionals are uniquely trained to be able to rapidly deploy, operate and document military and humanitarian operations in dangerous scenarios. TacRAT 2025 reinforced the importance of being as tactically capable as the forces they support.
“We really focus on the ability to operate in austere environments under combat conditions,” said Geoffroy. “We take the extra level of training seriously when it comes to building our ability to integrate and being ready to operate in ground-type scenarios”.
Along with tactical lethality, teamwork was heavily emphasized as an important skill for combat camera Airmen to learn and apply during this exercise.
“This exercise was designed to reinforce the importance of team dynamics,” said Rosado. “Most of the time, we’ll be solo when we go out on missions, so it’s important that we’re able to mesh well with whoever we get attached to and be an asset”.
TacRAT continues to be an essential component of the 1st CTCS’s commitment to combat readiness and lethality.
