FORT GORDON, Ga – An Army aircraft electrician will represent U.S. Army Cyber Command at the 2025 Department of Defense Enlisted Aid of the Year competition.

Sgt. 1st Class Gregory Burchett, the enlisted aide for ARCYBER’s Commanding General, Lt. Gen. Maria Barrett, has served in the position since 2022.

“It has been an eye-opening experience,” Burchett said. “I get to see how the Army operates at a completely different level than what I’m used to and how the different MOSs mesh together.”

Burchett’s degrees in culinary arts and nutrition helped qualify him for the enlisted aide role.

“I have degrees in culinary arts and nutrition,” said Burchett. “While I was working on the flight line, I would always cook for my soldiers. I saw that this position was accepting applications through a chain of command. They encouraged me, so I put in my packet.”

Burchett’s love of cooking began with his great-grandfather, who taught him to create new recipes by combining ingredients. His mother and grandmother also encouraged him to experiment in the kitchen.

He said his mom and grandma would also let him help in the kitchen. Under their supervision, the kitchen became a place where he could experiment with different ingredients to create something of his own.

“I still do that now, especially when it comes to baking,” Burchett said.

The duty of an enlisted aide does not end with simply preparing meals.

An enlisted aide is a military member assigned to a general or flag officer to handle administrative tasks, household management, official social event planning and execution, and other duties that would otherwise detract from the officer’s primary official responsibilities.

“My place of duty is the CG’s quarters,” Burchett said.

He is responsible for maintaining the quarters where she entertains distinguished visitors.

“I also do landscaping when and where it is needed,” said Burchett. “So anywhere she can host social events in the house, I’m responsible for making sure it’s clean.”

He also assists in cleaning and preparing her uniforms.

An enlisted aide’s duties must relate to the military and official duties of the general officer and serve a necessary military purpose.

Burchett received a recommendation to compete from the Army’s senior enlisted aide advisor and the regimental sergeants major for food service and the culinary training center.

“I am honored to be thought of for this role,” he said. “I am going to do my best. I could not let the opportunity pass without at least attempting to take this win for ARCYBER and the Army.”

The Army has presented many opportunities to Burchett, which allowed him to pursue a dream he didn’t even know he had.

Burchett said the Army provided him with the opportunities to shape his own experiences and career, leading him from his initial interest in aircraft maintenance to discovering his passion for culinary arts.

“The Army has helped [me] pave the way to many paths,” Burchett said. “The Army gave me many experiences to learn from and get me where I’m at.”

The Enlisted Aide of the Year award recognizes outstanding enlisted aides for exemplary service, management skills, community leadership, and technical knowledge in supporting high-ranking military officers.

The winner of the competition is chosen after each participant competes in a selection board, a written test, and a cooking portion.

The American Culinary Federation sanctions the cooking portion, said Burchett.

This allows service members to earn certification medals alongside their civilian counterparts.

Burchett said the Robert Irvine Foundation hosts the event. The award ceremony takes place at the Pentagon’s Hall of Heroes.
