USS New Mexico (SSN 779) Returns to Homeport After Deployment
NORFOLK, Va. —The Virginia-class fast-attack submarine USS New Mexico (SSN 779)
returned to Naval Station Norfolk on September 23, concluding a three month deployment
supporting NATO’s Special Operations Forces exercise.
During the deployment, the crew executed NATO’s Dynamic Messenger exercise, contributing to
joint force objectives.
“Team New Mexico is excited to be home with family and friends, and equally excited for the
opportunity to once again project submarine dominance in theater,” said Cmdr. Hector Marin,
commanding officer of USS New Mexico.
Family and friends welcomed home the crew during a Return to Home Port ceremony,
celebrating the Sailors’ achievements and safe return.
“I’m happy and grateful for the experience,” said Machinist’s Mate (Nuclear) 2nd Class Cameron
McNovich. “I learned a lot about myself and those around me. We got to see some amazing
sights and do some stuff I would have never done if not for this deployment, and me joining the
Navy.”
Fast-attack submarines are multi-mission platforms enabling five of the six Navy maritime strategy core capabilities – sea control, power projection, forward presence, maritime security, and deterrence. They are designed to excel in anti-submarine warfare, anti-ship warfare, strike warfare, special operations, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, irregular warfare and mine warfare.
