SOUTH KOREA -- United Nations Command successfully concluded its third Member States Chaplains Symposium on Sept. 18., wrapping up four days of dialogue, reflection and remembrance across the Republic of Korea.

Chaplains from the United States, Republic of Korea, Belgium, the Philippines, South Africa, and Thailand, gathered Sept. 15-18 to strengthen professional ties and reaffirm their shared mission of supporting service members and their families.

The symposium included a mission briefing at U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys, a visit to Camp Bonifas near the Demilitarized Zone, a wreath-laying ceremony at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Busan — the only U.N. cemetery in the world — and a stop at Gyeryong, home to the Republic of Korea’s joint service headquarters. Delegates also exchanged best practices in religious support during two days of discussion sessions at Seoul’s Dragon Hill Lodge.

Col. Hyeon Joong “Mike” Kim, command chaplain for United Nations Command, U.S. Forces Korea and Combined Forces Command, escorted the delegation.

“Bringing together chaplains from across the United Nations Command member states reinforces the values of faith, service and resilience that transcend borders,” Kim said.
“This symposium is not just about remembering the past, but about preparing to care for those who serve today.”

United Nations Command, established in 1950, leads the multinational effort to enforce the Korean Armistice Agreement and preserve stability on the peninsula. Today, it coordinates with 18 member states that contributed combat forces and medical support during the Korean War, ensuring readiness and mutual support.

The chaplains’ visit to historic sites underscored the enduring sacrifices of U.N. forces.

“Standing at the United Nations cemetery, where heroes from many nations are laid to rest, we were reminded of our duty to honor their memory through faithful service,” Kim said.

The symposium concluded with a commitment to continued cooperation in providing spiritual care, moral guidance and compassion to troops serving UNC Member States.
