    419th Fighter Wing

September is designated National Suicide Prevention Month, a critical time for not just the 419th Fighter Wing but for the U.S. Air Force and the other branches to reinforce its commitment to the well-being of its Airmen, families, and civilian employees. This month serves as a focused opportunity to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health challenges and encourage open conversations about suicide.

“We're entering the 'stressy and depressy' months – weather changes, holidays, school pressures, family responsibilities, and financial worries can impact us all,” said BreAnna Safsten, 419th FW director of psychological health, “You don't have too white-knuckle through it.”

The Air Force recognizes that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Leaders at all levels are reminded of their responsibility to foster a climate of trust where individuals feel comfortable reaching out for support. This includes actively observing their teams for behavioral changes, knowing available resources, and intervening when concerns arise.

    Key Resources:
    • 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: Dial or text 988 to connect with trained counselors. This service is available 24/7, free, and confidential.
    • Military Crisis Line: Call 988 then Press 1, text 838255, or visit https://www.veteranscrisisline.net/
    • 419th Director of Psychological Health: Contact BreAnna Safsten directly for confidential support.
    • Chaplain Services: Chaplains provide confidential counseling and support.

Everyone has a role to play in suicide prevention. Be aware, be present, and be willing to listen. Small acts of kindness and genuine connection can make a significant difference in someone’s life.
Remember: If you or someone you know is struggling, reach out for help. You are not alone.
