FORT BRAGG, NC –Womack Army Medical Center (WAMC) enjoyed another huge turnout at the Fort Bragg Maternity Fair held on Saturday, September 20th. More than 340 current and future parents and family came out, seeking resources and information.
Maj. Jennifer Hunt, Clinical Nurse Officer in Charge for Womack's Labor and Delivery unit, says she loved seeing the high turnout. "This is something that a lot of military treatment facilities started a few years ago, and it is one of the most impactful events for a new family or those in the military community,” she said. “This is a great forum that’s fun and allows family to come out and learn more about what we have to offer and make connections and learn new things to help prepare them for this new addition in their life.”
Classes given by the Fort Bragg Army Community Services (ACS) included Birth Plans, Getting Ready for Baby, Safe Sleep, Period of Purple Crying and Infant Massage. Beneficiaries were also offered a Medication Safety class as well as Prenatal Yoga classes. Several tours of the Labor and Delivery unit were given, and Fort Bragg Fire and Emergency Services was on hand to do car seat safety checks for new parents. A new offering added to the bi-annual event was a blood drive that welcomed spouses and families to donate.
First time mother Breishka Tuzzino says the event really got her ahead of the game regarding being prepared. “This was so great,” she said. I got the chance to ask a lot of questions, and they made you feel comfortable asking them. I learned where to go in the hospital when that day comes. I definitely learned a lot of things I did not know as an expectant mother, and I would urge any other first time mom to come out to the next one!”
Alyssa Crissinger agrees. “I learned some things I did not know today,” Crissinger said. “I learned about parenting and childbirth, especially helpful was learning about the epidural—that’s was new to me. I would tell new moms to come here on the next one if they can!” The next Maternity Fair will be hosted by Womack next Spring.
