DURHAM, N.C. – The U.S. Army Raleigh Recruiting Battalion held a Change of Responsibility ceremony Friday morning at Durham Bulls Athletic Park, honoring the service of Command Sergeant Major Alberto Pena and welcoming CSM Robert White as the battalion’s new senior enlisted leader.
The Change of Responsibility is a longstanding Army tradition that symbolizes the transfer of authority, responsibility, and trust from one senior enlisted advisor to another. Presiding over the ceremony was Lt. Col. Vincent Burlazzi, commander of the Raleigh Recruiting Battalion, who emphasized the importance of continuity in leadership.
“We welcome CSM White to the Raleigh Recruiting Battalion family,” Burlazzi said. “He’s no stranger to this formation. He knows the mission and many of our teammates and the high standards that we uphold.”
Command Sergeant Major Thomas Kenny, senior enlisted leader of the 2nd Recruiting Brigade, also addressed the audience, highlighting the significance of leadership transitions. “Change is never bad, it’s what we make it to be,” Kenny said. “We instill what you can and hope those pieces stay when we leave. Whether you’re there or not, what you do will live on.”
The ceremony recognized the contributions of Pena, who served as the battalion’s senior enlisted advisor for 16 months, mentoring Soldiers, guiding leaders, and strengthening the battalion’s outreach and recruiting mission across North Carolina.
As he assumed responsibility, White expressed gratitude for the opportunity and trust placed in him. “LTC Burlazzi, thank you for your trust that you gave me with this incredible opportunity,” White said. “As leaders, we know that this path requires sacrifice.”
The Raleigh Recruiting Battalion is responsible for Army recruiting operations across central and eastern North Carolina. The battalion’s leaders highlighted that today’s ceremony reflects not only a transition of responsibility but also the Army’s ongoing commitment to excellence as it advances the Army Transformation Initiative, which is modernizing the force for 2030 and beyond.
Friday’s ceremony brought together Soldiers, families, and community leaders to honor the service of Pena and to celebrate the continued strength and readiness of the Army team under White’s leadership.
