BETHESDA, Md. – Naval Medical Research Command (NMRC) leadership and staff took part in a three-day meeting of the Health Services Operational Advisory Group (HSOAG) from September 9-11.

The meeting gave Marine Corps and Navy medical leadership a forum to share the latest resources, research findings and advances that support the readiness and well-being of U.S. service members.

NMRC staff presented the progress and results of ongoing work to other HSOAG attendees. Capt. Eric Welsh, NMRC commander, spoke to the assembled stakeholders on the role of Research and Development in Marine health.

Rear Adm. Guido Valdes, The Medical Officer (TMO) of the Marine Corps, provided remarks about the importance of this meeting.

“This event is about developing solutions and cutting-edge technologies with Marine and Navy medicine researchers,” said Valdes, “We support the evolving requirements of the fleet, what they need, and how we can leverage our resources and teams to make it happen. Marine and Navy medicine researchers, partnering together, multiplies the capability of the force and allows us to discover and obtain capabilities that will support Marines on the battlefield.”

In between sessions on the final day of the meeting, HSOAG attendees from other organizations had the opportunity to review NMRC research posters and learn first-hand about the command’s Clinical Trials Center, Infectious Diseases Directorate, Operational Undersea Medicine Directorate, Biological Defense Research Directorate and Naval Advanced Medical Development. Posters and demonstrations on display showed recent research projects, capabilities and current clinical trials, all of which support Marine health and readiness.

“We have a number of products, from dive sensors for physiological modeling of navy divers up to medical products and devices for combat wound care and dental applications for maxillofacial injuries,” said Tom Dunn, acting program manager for NMRC’s Naval Advanced Medical Development department. “I’m most excited about our bacteriophage; there is research from NMRC and the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research that developed this technology. Recently, we were able to mature it to a point where we can test it in patients, and we have completed two large phase II studies in Staph A bacteremia and diabetic foot osteomyelitis.”

Marine Corps Health Services, led by TMO, advises the Commandant and Marines Headquarters staff on all healthcare matters. TMO serves as the functional expert in working with the appropriate Headquarters agencies for determining medical requirements and makes recommendations on all medical matters relevant to supporting the Marine Corps.

NMRC, headquarters of Navy Medicine Research & Development, is engaged in a broad spectrum of activity from basic science in the laboratory to field studies in austere and remote areas of the world to investigations in operational environments. In support of Navy, Marine Corps and joint U.S. warfighter health, readiness and lethality, researchers study infectious diseases, biological warfare detection and defense, combat casualty care, environmental health concerns, aerospace and undersea medicine, operational mission support and epidemiology.
