PITTSBURGH — Three Steel Airmen from the 911th Airlift Wing graduated from the Community Leadership Course for Veterans XII, hosted by Leadership Pittsburgh Inc.

Col. Christopher Kurpiel, commander of the 911th Operations Group; Col. Jason Price, commander of the 911th Security Forces Squadron; and Master Sgt. Tana Sanchez, also of the 911th SFS, were among the 21 graduates recognized at a ceremony in Pittsburgh.

The four-month program, which ran from May through September, helps military veterans and service members translate their leadership skills into civic engagement and community service across the region.

“Nobody does it better than Pittsburgh,” said Jennifer Beer, president and CEO of Leadership Pittsburgh Inc. “The program isn’t to teach leadership — these men and women already have that — but to show them how to put it to use in the community.”

Class speaker Brett Tucker, a Navy veteran and technical manager of cyber risk management at Carnegie Mellon University’s Software Engineering Institute, urged his cohort to keep striving. Although every cohort has their merits the work is never done.

“Cohort 12 of CLCV, we are not the best class ever. We have a license to learn, and we’ve been given a gateway to do amazing things,” Tucker said. “We are striving to be the best class ever … forever seeking, striving, wanting to do more for our community.”

Leadership Pittsburgh Inc., a nonprofit founded more than 40 years ago, runs several programs aimed at strengthening civic leadership, including its flagship Leadership Pittsburgh and the Leadership Development Initiative. The CLCV program recently earned national recognition from the Association of Leadership Programs for its innovation and success.
