If there is one component that is integral to engines and auxiliary systems aboard any naval vessel, it would be the motor. Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center’s (MARMC) Outside Electrical Shop is brining motor rewind capability, in-house.

“Motor rewind is the process of restoring an electric motor to working condition by removing and replacing its internal wire windings,” explained Leading Chief Petty Officer Joshua Stribling. “This extends the life of the motor, restores efficiency, and avoids the cost of full replacement.”

MARMC, having the capability to provide rewinding services to the fleet prevents costly downtime, ensures mission readiness, and allows the Navy to maximize equipment life while reducing reliance on outside vendors.

MARMC‘s Outside Electrical Shop has nine Sailors assigned to the Motor Rewind effort.

“Nine of our Sailors, six of whom have the Motor Rewind NEC (Navy Enlisted Classification), have been working with Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) to strengthen their skills in the hands-on processes of motor rewind for motors less than 7.5 horsepower,” said William Davis, outside electrical zone manager. “They are preparing themselves to take on work in the near future from combatant ships on the waterfront.”

The Motor Rewind Enlisted Classification School is typically six-weeks long and Sailors are trained to employ advanced electrical theory, execute diagnostics, and practice hands-on rewinding techniques.

Stribling believes having the motor rewind capability will increase MARMC’s core competencies as a unit and prepare the Sailors for their eventual return to the fleet.”
“By conducting motor rewinds in-house, MARMC saves time and money while giving Sailors hands-on technical mastery. This capability provides immediate fleet readiness support and ensures skills are retained within the Navy,” he said.

Historically, the MARMC has bolstered cost-savings by executing repairs in-house, instead of contracting out the work.

“The U.S. Navy has maintained motor rewind capability for decades as a core industrial skillset, ensuring ships can be sustained at sea and in port. MARMC has been central to this effort, we are training Sailors and providing direct fleet support,” said Stribling.

MARMC, a field activity under Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), provides surface ship maintenance, management and oversight of private sector maintenance and fleet technical assistance to ships in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States.
