Leadership, family members, and Airmen of the 157th Air Refueling Wing gathered to dedicate Pogorek Avenue in tribute to the exemplary service and enduring legacy of Brig. Gen. John Pogorek, former commander of the New Hampshire Air National Guard, in a ceremony held at Pease Air National Guard Base, New Hampshire, August 9, 2025.
Pogorek was killed in a hit-and-run incident on July 8, 2024, while securing a trailer load roadside near his home in Rochester.
“His presence is all around us,” said Col. Nelson Perron, commander of the 157th Air Refueling Wing. “Today is about ensuring that those who pass by this avenue will look up and remember or ask about Gen. Pogorek. To remember a man who truly believed that service meant being part of something larger than self.”
Pogorek had more than 31 years of distinguished service to the nation and the Granite State. He served as commander of the 157th Air Refueling Wing and later as Assistant Adjutant General for Air, where he provided vital leadership for more than 1,300 Airmen and civilians at Pease ANGB.
“He was a very humble man,” said Brig. Gen. William Davis, Assistant Adjutant General Air, New Hampshire National Guard. “And that humility is exactly why he made such a monumental impression on all of us.”
Pogorek Avenue is at the center crossroads of Pease ANGB, the connection between maintenance, operations, mission support, medical and the wing staff.
“It is truly fitting that this avenue is at the heart of the organization,” said Perron. “Gen. Pogorek loved being in the New Hampshire National Guard, he loved serving this nation, this state, and he loved this Wing.”
