REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. – A recent three-day, cross-functional training session, with an end goal of ensuring a smooth fiscal year 2025 close out, focused on integration, alignment, and a deeper operational understanding to strengthen the Fuels Program Project Delivery Team.
The U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center, Huntsville Fuels Program, conducted the all-hands stand down training session July 22-24, marking the first time all its 40 PDT members engaged in collaborative instruction focused on internal processes, roles and interdependencies.
Huntsville Center PDTs consist of professionals from engineering, safety, contracting, project management and other disciplines and are backbone of how the Center provides services to its stakeholders.
“This PDT Standdown was essential in reinforcing that success is a shared effort,” said Jesus Ramirez, Fuels program manager. “It sharpened our ability to operate as one team and align on our missions while becoming more capable of delivering results efficiently and effectively.”
Through sessions led by the PDT members themselves, the team revisited standard workflows, examined cross-functional dependencies and shared insights into operations from different perspectives. The training aimed to help process revalidation and awareness, as well as support team integration and knowledge transfer.
“The training was very helpful and gave us the opportunity to better define PDT functional roles,” said Curtney Walters, PTD member and Fuels Program lead engineer. “This clarity equates to a system operating with optimized efficiency, directly attributable to the synergy between its components, critical for maintaining system performance.”
The initiative also served as a critical synchronizing tool as people have shifted roles, some of whom now are gaining their first holistic view for how the entire PDT operates.
“The hiring freeze is impacting our team like everyone else,” said Dennis Bacon, Fuels Program chief. “The Fuels PDT stepped up to cover the gaps and continues to ensure delivery this worldwide program. That’s the culture we have built; resilient, responsive and mission focused.”
Huntsville Center’s Fuels Program provides vital maintenance and repair services to the Department of Defense and other government agencies to sustain a worldwide robust fueling capability in support of the Army, Navy and Air Force service components.
Anticipated outcomes from the session include improved compliance with project delivery standards, increased cross-functional fluency and identification of opportunities to streamline current practices.
“For our newer staff, this training served as a foundational experience equipping them with critical knowledge, shared expectations and a clear understanding of their role in supporting the broader mission from day one,” said Derrick Slaughter, Fuels Deputy program manager.
The training concluded with Bacon sharing a holistic perspective and the importance of the mission.
“Let’s take what we’ve learned here and apply it every day, in every task. This training only matters if it translates into how we operate as professionals and as a team. Let’s raise the standard together,” he said.
