WASHINGTON, D.C. – From the battlespace of Iraq to the corridors of the White House, Cmdr. Christopher Fairfield has built his career solving complex engineering challenges in the world’s most demanding environments.
Now, the seasoned Civil Engineer Corps officer brings his unique blend of technical expertise and international perspective to Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command Washington (NAVFAC Washington) as its new Operations Officer.
Fairfield, a Norwich University military college graduate and registered Professional Engineer, joins NAVFAC Washington with a distinguished career spanning diverse assignments including combat deployments to Iraq, service at the White House and overseas postings including Naval Support Activity Souda Bay, Greece.
His technical expertise as a Level 3 contracting professional and background in energy and environmental readiness programs position him to advance NAVFAC Washington’s mission-critical operations.
“Military service was my goal for as long as I can remember,” said Fairfield. “The Civil Engineer Corps offered an opportunity to both serve in uniform and practice the profession of engineering which appealed to me greatly.”
Drawing from his varied operational background, Fairfield emphasizes a results-driven approach to leadership.
“Overseas, results matter,” he explained. “I hope to help NAVFAC Washington baseline intended goals and outcomes and then measure our performance and success as having accomplished what we set out to do. We should not allow ourselves to be hampered by old ways of thinking or bureaucratic processes.”
His experience managing presidential construction programs and overseas public works departments has shaped his leadership philosophy.
“Leadership is providing purpose, direction, and motivation while operating to accomplish the mission and improve the organization,” Fairfield stated. “When focused on people and the mission, while seeking constant improvement, great things can be achieved.”
As Operations Officer, Fairfield will leverage his technical and acquisition expertise to balance challenging teams to perform while maintaining realistic expectations. His priority focuses on ensuring military construction, facilities sustainment, real estate, and environmental readiness programs “continue to enhance the mission of the Navy to deter aggression and win in conflict if necessary.”
Looking ahead, Fairfield expressed enthusiasm about his new role: “I am most excited about having a direct impact for our supported commands on a daily basis. With so much change occurring, we have a tremendous opportunity to shape the future NAVFAC.”
The new operations officer resides in Arlington, Virginia, with his family, where he enjoys travel, cooking, exercise and gardening.
