FORT LEE, Va. – Soldiers, leaders and logistics professionals gathered for a town hall focused on the evolving role of multifunctional logistics noncommissioned officers, highlighting their critical impact on Army readiness and operational success.
Hosted by the U.S. Army Combined Arms Support Command, the event brought together senior leaders, seasoned logisticians and junior NCOs to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the logistics community. The town hall served as a platform to recognize the versatility and leadership of multifunctional logistics NCOs —those trained across multiple sustainment disciplines including supply, maintenance, transportation and distribution.
Command Sgt. Maj. Jimmy Sellers, U.S. Army Materiel Command sergeant major, opened the session with remarks emphasizing the strategic importance of logistics in multi-domain operations.
“I think this is very serious business; we started on this journey probably about eight, nine months ago,” Sellers said. “We started talking about what does it mean to be a multifunctional noncommissioned officer and what does it mean to actually have sustainers looked at as warfighters?”
Panel discussions included topics such as being an expert in your field, learning outside your career field, an update on the M1F Personnel Development Skill Identifier and the role of a multifunctional logistics NCOs in combined arms.
Command Sgt. Maj. Amador Aguillen Jr., 13th Armored Corps Sustainment Command sergeant major, underscored the importance of multifunctional logistics NCOs in combined arms.
“From World War I until now, the way that the United States Army has dominated is by using combined arms,” Aguillen said. “And how do they dominate? They dominate because of everybody in this room. We are the sustainers that push; we’re flexible. We’re agile. We understand, and make sure that the tempo of the battle continues on.”
The town hall also featured a question-and-answer session where junior NCOs could engage directly with panelists, ask questions and propose solutions to sustainment challenges. Topics ranged from career development pathways to improving interoperability across logistics branches.
As the Army continues to modernize its force structure, multifunctional logistics NCOs are expected to play an increasingly vital role in shaping agile expeditionary sustainment capabilities. The town hall concluded with a few calls to action: invest in training, foster innovation and elevate the voices of those on the ground.
“I’m super proud of the sustainment community at large,” Sellers said. “I think we’ve got a couple things to continue to tweak and work on as the team gets the message out through these town halls, but we're heading in the right direction as a community.”
