MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - Twins are often known to dress alike. For Terrence and Terrell Bennett, that includes the same uniform and even the same rank on their collars.

The brothers were promoted to the rank of gunnery sergeant together at Cherry Point’s Marine Air Control Group 28 Aug. 2.

When Headquarters Marine Corps announced promotions for staff noncommissioned officers, each Marine was given a number which determines when they will get promoted.

“My brother was chosen as number 347 and I was number 504,” said Gunnery Sgt. Terence D. Bennett, an ammunition technician for Weapons Training Battalion, Quantico, Va.. “In July they promoted 304 Marines to the rank of gunnery sergeant, and I found out they were promoting 200 more this month. After figuring out that my brother and I would be getting promoted together I called him up and we had a good laugh.”

Twin brother Terrell, the intelligence chief for MACG-28, said he talked to his sergeant major and requested he and his brother be promoted at MACG-28 and have their father, who is a retired master gunnery sergeant, promote them. The sergeant major agreed to the request.

“My father thought my brother was getting promoted in September and he’d have to go to Quantico for it,” said Terrell. “Due to deployments I’ve been on, this is the first promotion my father has seen of mine since I’ve started rising higher in rank. Having him here is an honor and truly motivating. My father was a career Marine who retired as a master gunnery sergeant after 30 years of service.”

Jerry C. Bennett, father of the twins said being able to promote his two sons has been an amazing.

“I am very proud of my sons,” said Jerry. “I am on cloud nine right now. I never thought I would be promoting these two, let alone at the same time and rank.”
